| Dual Diagnosis and Drug Rehab Integrated Treatment Programs |
WHAT IS DUAL DIAGNOSIS AND A CO-OCCURRING DISORDER?
At Cornerstone, dual-diagnosis means having chemical dependency and a co-occurring disorder. Many of our clients have multiple co-occurring disorders e.g. medical (high blood pressure, diabetes, pain issues) and psychiatric (depression, bipolar, generalized anxiety disorder, attention deficit disorder, panic disorder and social phobia).
We believe that a client must be clean and sober (fully detoxed) before treatment can begin. Treatment involves managing all the co-occurring disorders at the same time to get the client stable enough to continue working on their recovery.
Cornerstone of Southern California has chosen to focus on Relapse Prevention as central to our treatment programs.
Cornerstone of Southern California believes that drug rehab and alcohol treatment programs must integrate the treatment of chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders. This ability to manage the more complex client has enabled Cornerstone to become the leader in the field of treatment, especially in Southern California.
Cornerstones’ affiliated independent physicians have enabled us to maintain our lead in this area of complex care. It is so important to have the combined assessment of both our own team and the consultations available from our affiliates to clearly define diagnoses and treatment planning.
Cornerstone of Southern California has a fully integrated continuum of care for complete recovery management. In addition to detox, primary rehab and outpatient, we offer extended care programs that can focus on the management of individuals with co-occurring disorders.
Cornerstone of Southern California can assist with referring the individual to a specially chosen, independent affiliate physician or psychologist who has special training and expertise in addiction medicine. We assist our clients in regulating their appropriate prescribed medications.
Cornerstone schedules DRA (Dual Recovery Anonymous) meetings because, at traditional AA meetings, the client with a dual disorder often don’t feel comfortable sharing. This discussion can be had at a DRA meeting, and the person can attend AA and share about other issues of learning to live life without alcohol or drugs.
Is Addiction with Co-Occurring Disorders Common?
The National Institute of Mental Health has found that:
- 10 million Americans are affected by dual diagnoses
- 56% of individuals with a bipolar disorder, abuse substances
- 32% of individuals with a mood disorder other than bipolar, abuse substances
- 27% of individuals with an anxiety disorder, abuse substances
We have found that our clients have co-occurring disorders over 60% of the time.
What are the Goals for dual recovery?
There are three basic goals for dual recovery:
- Develop a lifestyle that is free of alcohol and other intoxicating drugs to prevent relapse.
- Learn ways to manage the symptoms of emotional or psychiatric illness in a healthy and constructive way. Take necessary psychiatric medications as prescribed.
- To diagnose, treat and allow ongoing management of medical problems, especially pain.
Over the years Cornerstone has gained significant expertise in helping our clients manage their chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders with the help of our staff and independent affiliate medical professionals. We will often recommend that these dually diagnosed clients transfer, once stable, to our extended care program. This allows a longer and more intense treatment than only after-care or outpatient treatment provides.
REMEMBER, the longer the treatment/management, the better the outcome.
Call us; we have been helping individuals for almost 25 years.
